EXERCISE 7 : Use the SIMPLE PAST or the PAST PERFECT

1.       Class (begin, already) had already begun by the time I (get) got there, so I (make, quietly) had quietly made a seat in the back.
Kelas sudah dimulai pada saat saya sampai sana, jadi saya diam-diam membuat kursi dibagian belakang.
2.       Millions of year ago (roam) roamed the earth, but they (?) extinct by the time humankind first (?)……………..
Jutaan tahun yang lalu, mereka menjelajahi bumi, tetapi mereka……….. punah oleh manusia pertama kali.
3.       (?)……………… any of Picasso’s paintings before I (visit) visited the art museum.
................ ada lukisan Picasso sebelum saya mengunjungi museum seni (gambar).
4.       I almost missed my plane. All of yhe other passengers (board, already) had already boarded by the time I (get) got there.
Saya hampir kehilangan pesawat (penerbangan) saya, semua penumpang lain sudah naik pada saat aku sampai disana.
5.       Yesterday at a restaurant, I (see) saw Pam Donnelly, an old friend of mine. I (see, not) had not seen her in years. At first, I (recognize, not) had not recognized her because she (lose) lost at lest fifty pounds.
Kemarin di restaurant, saya melihat Pan Donnelly, dan seorang teman lama saya. Saya belum pernah melihat dia setahun. Pertama, saya belum mengenalnya karena dia hilang setidaknya 50 pound

EXERCISE 6 : Use the SIMPLE PAST or the PAST PERFECT . Are there some blanks where either tense is possible?

1.       He (be) had been a newspaper reporter before he (become) became a businessman.
Dia pernah menjadi seorangreporter berita sebelum menjadi seorang bisnis.
2.       I (fell) had felt a little better after I (take) took the medicine.
Saya sudah merasa sedikit lebih baik sesudah saya minum obat.
3.       I was late the teacher (give, already) had already given a quiz when I (get) got to class.
Saya telat, guru itu sudah memberi sebuah kuis pada saat saya sampai ke kelas.
4.       The anthropologist (leave) had left the village when she (collect) collected enough data.
Orang antropologi pernah tinggal didesa pada saat dia mengumpulkan cukup data.
5.       It was raining hard, but by the time class (be) was over, the rain (stop) had stopped .
Itu hujan deras,tetapi pada saat kelas selesai, hujan sudah berhenti.

EXERCISE 4 . USE THE SIMPEL PAST or THE PRESENT PERFECT . IN SOME SENTENCES, either tense is possible but the meaning is different

1.       I (attend, not) have not attended any parties since I came here.
Saya tidak pernah menghadiri beberapa pesta sejak saya datang kesini.
2.       Al (go) went to party at Sally’s apartement last Saturday night.
Al pergi ke pesta di apartemen Sally malam minggu kemarin.
3.       Bill (arrive) arrived here there days ago.
Bill tiba disini tiga hari lalu.
4.       Bill (be) has been here since the 22nd.
Bill sudah disini sejak tanggal 22.
5.       Try not to be absent from class again for the rest of the term. You (miss, already) have already missed you many classes just last week.
Jangan mencoba tidak hadir dari kelas lagi untuk sisa waktu. Kamu sudah kehilangan banyak pertemuan,kamu kehilangan 2 pertemuan selama seminggu kemarin.
6.       Last January, I (see) saw snow for the first time in my life.
Januari kemarin saya melihat salju untuk pertama kalinya di hidup saya.
7.       In her whole lifetime, Anna (see.never) has never seen snow.
Selama hidupnya, Anna belum pernah melihat salju.
8.       I (know) have know Grek Adams for ten years.
Saya sudah tahu Greg Adams selama 10 tahun.
9.       So far this week, I (have) had two tests and a quiz.
Sejauh minggu ini saya memiliki 2 tes dan sebuah kuis.
10.    Up to now, Professor Williams (give) gave our class five tests.

EXERCISE 3:  In the following, change the position of the expression of place.
            1.   Sally is listening to music in her room. - - - Sally is in room listening to music.
            2.   Roy is taking a nap on the chouch.
                  Roy is on the couch taking a nap.
            3.   Anita was attending a conference in England last month.
                  Anita was in England last month attending a conference.
            4.   The teacher is correcting papers at her desk.
                  The teacher is at desk correcting papers.
            5.   Some of the students were late to class because they were playing
                  soccer at the park. 
                  Some of the students were playing soccer at the park late to class.

  

EXERCISE 2 . USE THE SIMPLE PAST or THE PAST PROGRESSIVE

1.    I (have, almost) almost had a car accident last night.
                   I (drive) drove down
Washington Avenue
when suddenly I (See) saw was
                   seing a car in my car, I (step) stepped on the brakes and the brakes and
                   (swerve) swerved to the right. The other car (miss, Just) just missed my
                   car by about an ich.
                   Saya hampir mengalami kecelakaan tadi malam.
                   Saya mengendarai di jalan bawah Washington dengan tiba – tiba ketika
                   saya melihat sebuah mobil di jalur saya.
                   Itu datang di kanan mobil saya segera mengerem dan membelokkan ke
                   kanan.
                   Mobil lain hanya menghindari mobil saya dan beberapa inci.     
            2.    Ten year ago, the government (decided) decided to begin food program.
                  At the time, many people in the rural areas of the country (starve)
                  was starving due to several years of drought.
                  10 tahun yang lalu, pemerintah memutuskan untuk memulai program
                  makanan.
                  Pada waktu itu, banyak orang di area pedesaan sebuah Negara sedang
                  menderita kelaparan tepat dengan musim kering beberapa tahun.
            3.    IT was my first day of class. I (find, finally) finally found the right room.
                  The room (be, already) was already full of students. On one side of the
                   room, students (talk, busily) were talking busily to each other on
                   Spanish. Other students (speak) were speaking – Japanese, and some
                   ( converse) were conversing in Arabic. It sounded like the United Nations.

                   I (choose) choose an empty seat in the last row and (sit) sat down. In a
                   few minutes, the teacher (walk) was walking into the room and all the
                  multilingual conversation (stop) stopped
                   IT adalah hari pertama saya di kelas. Saya akhirnya menemukan

                   Ruangan sudah penuh oleh siswa – siswa. Di satu barisan di ruangan itu,
                   siswa – siswa sedang berbicara bahasa Spanyol. Siswa lainnya sedang
                   berbicara bahasa Jepang beberapa sedang berbicara bahasa Arab.
                   Itu terdengar seperti persatuan bangsa- bangsa. Beberapa siswa, namun
                   hanya duduk diam sendirinya. Saya memilih sebuah kursi kosong di
                   baris terakhir dan duduk. Dalam beberapa menit, guru itu masuk ke
                   kelas dan semua percakapan bahasa berhenti.   
            4.    A : (Hear, you) did you hear what she just said?
                  B : No, I (listen, not) I didn’t listen I (think) was thinking about something
                  else.
                  A : Apakah kamu dengar apa yang dikatakan?
                  B : Tidak, Saya tidak mendengar apa yang saya sedang berpikir tentang
                  suatu lain. 
            5.   A : Why weren’t you the at the meeting?
                  B : I (wait) was waiting for an overseas call from my family.
                  A : Kenapa kamu tidk ada dirapat?
                  B : Saya sedang menunggu untuk panggilan luar negeri dari keluarga
                  saya.  
            6.   A : I’m sure you meet carol Jones at the party last night.
                  B : I don’t remember her. What ( . . . , she) does she look like?
                  A : Saya yakin kamu bertemu carlo Jones dipesta kemarin malam.
                  B : Saya tidak ingat dia. Dia terlihat seperti apa?   
            7.   A : What’s wrong whit your foot ?
                  B : I (step) stepped on a bee while I (run) was running barefoot through
                  the grass. It (sting) stung me.
                  A : Apa ada yang salah dengan kakimu?
                  B : Saya menginjak lebih ketika Saya sedang berlari tanpa alas kaki di
                  rumput dan lebah menyengat saya. 
            8.   A : How (break, you) did you break your warm ?
                  B : I (slip) slipped on the ice while I (cross) was crossing the street in
                  front of drom.
                  A : Bagaimana kamu mematahkan …………?
                  B : Aku tergelincir diatas es saat aku melintasi jalan di depan drom

EXERCISE 1 .USED EITHER SIMPLE PRESENT or PRESENT PROGRESSIVE OF THE VERBS IN PARENTHESES

1.    I can’t afford that ring. It (cost) costs too much.
                 Saya tidak bisa membayar cincin itu, harganya terlalu mahal
          2.    Look. It (begin) begins to rain. (Unfortunately, I have not)      
                Unfortunately don’t have my umbrella with me. Tom is lucky. He (wear) is wearing a      raincoat.
                Lihat. cuaca mulai hujan. Sayangnya saya tidak memiliki payung saya. Tom  beruntung. Dia memakai sebuah jas hujan.
          3.    I (own, not) am not own an umbrella. I (wear) wear a waterproof hat on rainy days.
                 Saya tidak memiliki sebuah payung. .Saya memakai sebuah topi tahan air pada musim hujan. 
          4.    Right now I (look) am looking around the classroom. Yoko (write) is writing in her boo. Carlos (bite) is bitting his pencil. Wan – Ning (scratch) is scratching his head. Ahmed to be daydreaming, but perhaps he (think) is thinking hard about verb tenses. What (think, you) are you thinking Ahmed (do) is doing ?
                 Sekarang saya sedang melihat – melihat ruang kelas. Yoko sedang menulis di bukunya.  Carlos sedang menggigit pensilnya. Wan – Ning sedang menggaruk kepalanya. Ahmed sedang melamun, tapi mungkin sedikit berpikir keras tentang kata kerja. Apa yang sedang kamu pikiran, Apa yang sedang dilakukan ahmed?
          5.    There’s a book on my desk, but it (belong not) doesn’t belong to me.
                 Disana ada sebuah buku di meja saya tetapi bukan punya saya.
          6.    Dennis (fix) fixes the roof of his house today, and he (need) needs some help Can you help him?
                 Dennis membetulkan atap rumahnya hari ini, dan dia membutuhkan beberapa bantuan ,bisakah kamu membantunya?
          7.    Barbara (tutor, often) often tutors other students in her math assignment because he (understand, not) doen’t understand the material they (work) –  work on in their class this week.
                 Barbara sering mengajar murid lain di tugas matematikanya karena dia tidak mengerti ,mereka bekerja di kelasnya minggu ini.
          8.    Right now I (look) am looking at Janet. She (look) is looking angry. I wonder  what’s the matter. She (have) is having a frown on her face. She certainly (have,not) is not having any fun right now.
                 Sekarang saya sedang melihat Janet. Dia sedang terlihat marah. Saya melihat apa yang terjadi. Dia sedang mempunyai kekhawatiran di wajahnya. Dia jelas tidak bersenang – senang sekarang. 
          9.    A : Who is that woman how (stand) is standing next to the window?
                 B :  Which woman? (Talk, you) are you talking about the woman who (wear) is wearing the blue and old dress?
                 A : No, I (talk, not) don’t talk about her. I (mean) mean the woman who (wear)  wears the blue suit.
                 B : Oh, I (know, not) don’t know.  I (recognize, not) don’t recognize her.
                 A : Siapa wanita yang sedang berdiri di sebelah jendela?
                 B : Wanita mana? Apakah kamu sedang berbicara tentang wanita yang
                 memakai baju biru emas?
                 A : Tidak, Saya tidak berbicara tentangnya.  maksud saya adalah wanita yang memakai kaos biru.
                 B : Oh, Saya tidak tahu. Saya tidak kenal dia.
          10.  A : Close your eyes. Now listen carefully. What (hear, you) are you hearing ?What (do, I) am doing ?
                 B : I (believe) believe you (rub)  are rubbing the top if your desk whit your hand.
                 A : Close, but not exactly right. Try again. (listen, you)
                 B : Aha! You (rub) are you rubbing yout hands together.
                 A : Right!
                 A : Tutup mata kamu. Sekarang dengar baik-baik. Apakah yang     sedang kamu  dengar? 
                 B : Aha! Kamu sedang menggosokkan tangan kamu bersama.
                 A : Benar.
